Star Wars Skeleton Crew is an upcoming live-action Star Wars series set to premiere on Disney+ in 2023.
The series is being created by Jon Watts, the director of the recent Spider-Man movies starring Tom Holland. It will follow a group of 10-year-old kids trying to find their way home after becoming lost in space.
Plot and Characters
Not much is known yet about the plot or characters of Skeleton Crew. The official description says it will be a galactic version of classic Amblin coming-of-age adventure films from the 80s like E.T. and The Goonies.
It’s expected to focus on four children who accidentally get stranded on a distant planet and need to make their way back home. On their journey, they will apparently run into plenty of nefarious characters and strange creatures.
The young protagonists will be joined by Jude Law, who is playing one of the few adult characters. His exact role is still unclear, but he may serve as a guardian or mentor figure trying to protect the children.
Additional characters and story details are still being kept under wraps by Lucasfilm and Disney. But the premise alone offers lots of potential for an entertaining Star Wars adventure.
Connections to the Wider Star Wars Universe
While Skeleton Crew features mostly new characters, it will still have connections to the wider Star Wars franchise. It is set roughly around the same time period as The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett.
The series timeline fits in between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens. This leaves room for potential cameo appearances from famous Star Wars characters like Luke Skywalker, Leia Organa, and even Baby Yoda.
Jon Watts has hinted that Skeleton Crew will incorporate elements from many eras of Star Wars storytelling. While focused on an original story, it will have references long-time fans will recognize and appreciate.
An Exciting New Direction for Star Wars
Skeleton Crew represents an exciting new direction for Star Wars. By centering on a group of children in space, it will take the franchise in refreshing directions.
Past movies and shows have mostly followed Jedi, soldiers, and smugglers. Seeing regular kids navigate through Star Wars adventures opens up great narrative potential.
The series promises imaginative alien planets, cool spaceships, strange creatures, and lots of peril. With Jon Watts at the helm and talented child actors leading the way, Skeleton Crew has all the ingredients to be a hit.
It will allow Star Wars to revisit the sense of wonder and spirit of adventure that made many fall in love with the series in the first place. When it arrives next year, expect Skeleton Crew to capture fans’ imaginations and expand what a Star Wars story can be.
